What is Tajweed, and why is it important?
Tajweed is the science of reciting the Qur’an with precise pronunciation, preserving the original way it was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It involves applying a set of rules that govern how each Arabic letter is articulated, where it emerges from the mouth or throat (its “makhraj”), and the attributes (sifaat) that define its sound. By adhering to these rules, one ensures that the Qur’an is read with clarity and accuracy, maintaining the divine message’s meaning and beauty.
The Importance of Tajweed:
The significance of Tajweed stems from the responsibility to convey the Qur’an exactly as it was revealed. Allah commands in the Qur’an:
“And recite the Qur’an with measured recitation.”
(Surah Al-Muzzammil, 73:4)

Imam Al-Jazari, a renowned scholar of Tajweed and Qira’at (different modes of Qur’anic recitation), famously said:

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also emphasized the importance of correct recitation in a hadith:
“The best of you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it.”
